Choices–A Poem That Was Supposed to be About Teeth, then Went Awry

So this poem was supposed to be about how I traumatically lost my first tooth in first grade … but instead this poem happened.  I don’t know exactly what my subconscious did … but, eh.  Interpret this poem however you like.

I’ll write the traumatic tooth-loss story some other time.

Choices

It wasn’t my  c h o i c e  when I lost

my  f i r s t  tooth.  It was first grade

and I had been  d r e a d i n g  the final

s n a p  that would echo

through my  t h o u g h t s

when I shed my  f i r s t  b o n e  in exchange

for money from a  d e l u s i o n.  But my

mouth  g u s h e d  blood—sweet

fountain of  s u g a r  I was too

y o u n g  to know—and the nurse

when I was  f i n a l l y  free to go see her,

she

pulled

the tooth

out.

Well, I hope you enjoyed that poem.  If you did, be sure to leave a like and I’ll write more stuff like this.

Thank you for reading!  I appreciate you!
